Mela Africa builds the trusted data and intelligence layer for Africa's farmers. We help banks, insurers, input companies, buyers and development programmes see and serve farmers, so more farmers get loans, insurance and fair markets. We work from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
About the role
You'll lead machine learning at Mela, from first experiments to models our partners rely on. Your work will decide how well a bank, insurer or buyer understands a farmer.
What you’ll do
Design, train and ship machine learning models into production.
Measure how models perform on real outcomes, not just test sets.
Keep models fair, explainable and monitored as data grows.
Work with our data scientist and engineers on data and features.
Spend time with farmers and partners to understand the problem.
What you’ll bring
Experience building and shipping machine learning systems.
Strong Python and modern ML tools such as PyTorch or scikit-learn.
Solid grounding in statistics and model evaluation.
Clear writing and the ability to explain your models simply.
Nice to have
Experience with credit, risk, insurance or agricultural data.
Experience deploying models with MLOps tools.
